The Alfred Fried Photography Award is awarded by The Photographische Gesellschaft, (PHG) and Edition Lammerhuber in partnership with UNESCO, the Austrian Parliament, the Austrian Parliamentary Reporting Association, the International Press Institute (IPI) and the World Press Photo Foundation. The Photographische Gesellschaft, (PHG) is the longest-standing photographic society in the German-speaking countries and the second-oldest in the world.
It was founded on 22 March 1861 by Anton Georg Martin at the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna.
Edition Lammerhuber is an Austrian publisher, based in Baden near Vienna, dedicated to photography and to the interpretation of science and art.
The Alfred Fried Photography Award aims to present human efforts to live together in peace and the quest for beauty and goodness in our lives. The award goes to those photographs that best express the idea that our future lies in peaceful coexistence.
Summary of opportunity
The winner of the Alfred Fried Photography Award will receive the sum of € 10,000. In addition, the top five listed photographers will be awarded the Alfred Fried Peace Medal. The winner of the Childen Peace Image of the Year will receive the sum of € 1,000. The Special Award of the Jury for the best single picture entry will receive the sum of € 1,000.
The award ceremony will be held at the Austrian Parliament in Vienna on 20 September 2019, days ahead of the UN International Peace Day.
The winning picture will be on display for one year at the Austrian Parliament and will be included in the permanent art collection of the Austrian Parliament. (click here). All submitted images have the chance to take part in international exhibitions.
Judging Criteria
The international jury of the Alfred Fried Photography Award will judge the photographs on artistic merit, originality, subject and style.

The Alfred Fried Photography Award is open to all photographers from anywhere in the world.
