Background
The United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) is the UN’s capital investment agency for the world’s 47 least developed countries. With its capital mandate and instruments, UNCDF offers “last mile” finance models that unlock public and private financial resources, especially at the domestic level, to reduce poverty and support local economic development. In Bangladesh, UNCDF is supporting initiatives designed to unlock the flow of domestic and private sector capital to invest in infrastructure and service projects needed to accelerate local economic development and private sector development. By strengthening how finance works at the local level, UNCDF contributes to SDG 1 (no poverty), 5 (gender equality), 8 (decent work and economic growth), 11 (resilient cities), and 17 (unlocking public & private finance for the poor at the local level) on the means of implementation by identifying those market segments where innovative financing models can have transformational impact in helping reach the last mile and address exclusion and gender inequalities of access.

UNCDF Tanzania is currently implementing a programme in the Kigoma refugee camps as well as the surrounding host communities. The project aims to increase access to finance for refugees through savings groups, financial education, and digital literacy.

UNCDF Tanzania is seeking for an intern to provide support in project monitoring & evaluation, reporting, program development and communications on financial inclusion and financial/digital literacy interventions in Tanzania. The intern will work under the direct supervision of UNCDF’s Programme Specialist based in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Duties and Responsibilities
The intern will support ongoing project monitoring & evaluation, program development and communications activities. Specifically, the intern will be responsible for the following:
Monitoring and Reporting:

  • Support the Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E) coordinator;
  • Work closely with partner institutions to collect and analyse data;
  • Undertake regular field visits to UNCDF projects in Nyarugusu, Mtendeli and/or Nduta Refugee Camps (Kigoma Region) and other locations in greater Tanzania to monitor project progress and results (such official travel at the request of UNCDF, in the discharge of the activities related to the internship shall be reimbursed by UNCDF including payment of daily subsistence allowance, as applicable).
  • Draft monthly reports on challenges and results for circulation to UNCDF programme staff in Dar es Salaam, Kasulu, as well as to partner staff and contractors;
  • Attend and report on meetings to stay up-to-date on UN policies for monitoring and reporting across UN agencies;

Knowledge Sharing and Communication:

  • Draft blog posts, articles, and other communications documents highlighting the experience of UNCDF Tanzania to be published on UNCDF websites and UN newsletters;
  • Update project website content;
  • Provide support on the organization of workshops, trainings, and knowledge sharing events for the wider inclusive finance community;
  • Attend industry events, workshops and meetings and when necessary, provide program support for events and meetings (e.g. notetaking, drafting summaries, assisting set up);

Programme Development and Management:

  • Collaborate with key partners and stakeholders to research and develop new initiatives and strategies to sharpen delivery of financial services in Tanzania with an emphasis on rural women;
  • Draft, review and edit knowledge products and presentations for a wide, non-technical audience;
  • Create concept notes and other programme documents for the scale-up of the inclusive finance (A2F) and financial/digital literacy for refugee programme;

Assist with fundraising;

  • Research and administrative tasks to support program design and implementation.
  • Other tasks may be requested, and activities may be tailored to fit the skills and interests of the selected intern.

Required Skills and Experience
Education:

  • Candidate must be enrolled in a degree programme in Economics, International Development, International Relations, Public Administration, Marketing, Communication, Journalism, Finance or another related field or equivalent studies.
  • Applicants to the UNDP internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher)
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent);
  • Have graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) and (b) above) and, if selected, must start the internship within one-year of graduation.

Experience:
Some entry-level and practical working experience within the financial sector and/or microfinance, preferably in least developed countries is desirable;
Demonstrated experience working with refugees and/or in a post-conflict or relief context is a plus;
Management experience is a plus;
Prior experience in creating and developing briefs, blogs, documents for public dissemination;
Strong analytical, organizational and communication skills;
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and its tools including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Background in graphic design and photo editing. Knowledge of Photoshop and InDesign are valuable;
Experience working/living in the Global South is a plus.

Language:
Strong writing and speaking abilities in English.
Knowledge of the other UN official working language is an asset;

Work Arrangements:
The intern is expected to work full time in Rwanda UNCDF Office;
Work space will be provided, and the intern may not have access to office computer, but the intern is expected to bring and use her/his own computer

Internships Conditions:
UNCDF Internship programme is governed by the UNDP Internship policy framework & rules;
Interns are not financially remunerated by UNCDF. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of the nominating institution, related institution or government, which may provide the required financial assistance to its students; or by the student, who will have to obtain financing for subsistence and make his/her own arrangements for travel, accommodation, etc.

Interns must have a proof of medical and life/accident insurance, valid for the location in which the internship will be carried out and be able to provide insurance proof at the time of their selection in which the internship will be carried out;

The purpose of the Internship Programme is not to lead to further employment with UNCDF but to complement an intern’s studies; therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of an internship.
